Yankees at Mariners Preview and Betting Pick

Yankees at Mariners Preview and Predictions

Jameson Taillon (3-4) and the New York Yankees travel to Seattle to take on Justus Sheffield (5-7) and the Mariners Tuesday, July 6th. Here’s our take on Yankees at Mariners Preview and Picks!

Mariners Preview

This is a below-average Seattle Mariners team with an above-average record so far this season. Seattle is 5 games above .500 and are just 3.5 games back in the Wild Card race.

They have a team 4.40 ERA which is 19th in the MLB. Justus Sheffield has a 5.88 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP which is in the bottom half of the league for starters. Sheffield gets hit hard and often. He has given up 91 hits and 13 home runs in 72 innings while striking out just 57 batters.

Seattle also holds the lowest batting average amongst all major league teams at just .219. They are also dead last in on-base percentage. However, the Mariners are 12th in the league in homers which is pretty remarkable considering they are dead last in batting average.

Yankees Preview

The Yankees have been extremely disappointing this season sitting just one game above .500.

Jameson Taillon has been inconsistent and is struggling to record outs when the ball is put in play. He has a 5.33 ERA and has given up 14 HRs in 69.2 innings. One thing Taillon has excelled at is striking batters out; he is averaging over 1 strikeout per IP.

The Yankee offense that was feared by pitchers around the league for the past few seasons is now in the bottom half of the league in most categories. However, they are in the top 10 for home runs and their bats have started to come alive as of late.

Yankees at Mariners Preview

The Yankees always tend to be overvalued in the betting market just because they are the Yankees. However, I just see a Seattle team that is not as good as their record shows and is due for some losses.

The Yankees face problems when they match up against a pitcher who strikes batters out at a high clip. I think with Sheffield allowing balls to be in play and the Yankees bats starting to come back around they will find lots of success. We also saw Aaron Boone turn to some small ball in the last series bunting runners over and trying to bunt for a base hit. The Yankees may be trying to move away from the one-trick pony team with the long ball.

Yankees at Mariners Preview Manager Aaron Boone

Taillon is a big question mark on the mound for the Yankees. Which Taillon is going to show up? I think the Yankees will be searching for much-needed momentum heading into the all-star break to position themselves for a second-half playoff run. I think we will see a determined Taillon have success with his high strikeout rate facing the 5th most strikeout prone lineup in the league in the Mariners.

Manager Aaron Boone is going to be on the hot seat if this team continues to lose. He is going to have this team motivated to win some games.

  • Yankees (-160)
  • Jameson Taillon o5.5 strikeouts (+100)
